Q. What is the SESF Child sponsorship program?

  • The Nepal Living Standards Survey of 2010-2011 shows that the country has an adult literacy rate of 56.6%, with a huge disparity between males and females. The male literacy rate is 71.6% compared with 44.5% for women. Lack of educational opportunity is one of the main reasons for this.
  • Many parents are unable to send their children to school due to very low incomes. The children have been obliged to work in agriculture to sustain their families. Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries, with more than half of the population living on less than $1.25 a day.According to government figures, nearly half of all SESF has designed a child sponsorship program in the belief that small contributions of money and supplies can positively change the lives of many poor and needy children in their community.

Q. How does the program work?

  • SESF invites applications from the poorest children at the beginning of the academic year. The SESF working committee meets and selects the needy but talented children for recommendation for sponsorship. Priority is given to girls. The SESF works with local community leaders in the selection process. The SESF secretary stays in close contact with the children and their parents.

Q.What does the SESF do ?

The SESF provides the link between the child and the sponsors by:
  • Collecting the children's photo and biographical information and sending all the information and details to the prospective sponsors.
  • Regularly visiting the children, their schools and parents, collecting information about their progress and updating sponsors.
  •  Collecting the children's progress report and sending the copies to the sponsors.
  • Helping the children to write letters, greeting cards and so on to their sponsors.

Q.Who will receive support in the child sponsorship program?

  • Girls will be given priority.
  • The poorest children.
  • Children from untouchable (Dalit) families.
  • Physically and mentally handicapped children.

Q.Who will select the children

  • The SESF working committee will select the children. Local teachers and school Principals are encouraged to be involved in the selection process.

Q.Who is encouraged to get involved in the program?

  • Local people
  • Overseas individuals
  • Youth groups.
  • Donor agencies.

Q.What commitment is required from the sponsors?

  • SESF is concerned with making a long term impact in the children's lives. We ask the sponsors to make a commitment to sponsor a child until the child completes grade 12.

Q. How much does it cost to sponsor a child in Khandbari?

  • The cost to sponsor a child through SESF is around $20USD per month or $240 
  • The sponsored funds are distributed in the following way:
  • Direct Assistance to the child = 90%
  • Administration = 10%
  • The administration fees cover the costs associated with operating this program, including internet fees, stationary, postage, and taking, developing and scanning photos for the website etc.

Q. When will the child begin to receive the sponsorship?

  • Sponsorship begins as soon as the SESF receives money from the sponsor.
  • The child will receive the following:
  • Two school uniforms, shoes, school bags.
  • Sweater for the winter/ raincoat for the rainy season.
  • Books, stationery and other school supplies.
  • Snacks for the child
  • Medication

Q. Where can a child study?

  • The sponsored child can study at any of the following reputed boarding schools in the Khandbari area:

  • Arun View Boarding School,Khandbari
  • Chainpur Boarding School Chainpur, Sankhuwasabha
  • Himalaya Higher Secondary School, Khandbari
You can contact the SESF secretary treasurer, Mr.Tejanath Pokharel, and inform him that you would like to sponsor a child through SESF. Then the secretary will choose a per-selected child, who you will receive a photo of of the child.
He will direct you on how to transfer funds for the child and will be available to answer all your questions pertaining to the sponsorship program.

How can I track the progress of the child i sponsor?

  • At the end of each school term every sponsor will receive (via postal mail) the following items relating to the child. 
  • A copy of the child's school report.
  • A picture of the child
  • A detailed breakdown of income and expenditure for the child during the academic year

May I send gifts to my sponsored child?

  • Yes! All gifts can be sent directly to SESF. Please send any gifts via mail to the following address:

How can I communicate with my sponsored child?

  • Frequent contact between the child and the sponsor is encouraged. It establishes contact with the child you choose to sponsor and lets him/her feel loved. You can communicate through letters mailed to the above address or e-mail. E-mails will be printed by the project director and delivered to the child  for more information.
